How do I close up a shore house for the winter?
Keep the heat on at 65°F or higher, shut off and drain all the outside water, drain the toilets, close up the crawl space, and have someone check the house while you're gone. Leave the heat on and set it to at least 65°F. The American Red Cross says no lower than 55°F when you're away in cold weather, but the local advice at the shore is higher. Part-time owners in Ventnor, Margate and Longport have been urged to keep it at 65, and a Ventnor public works supervisor gave the same number during last February's cold snap.

The owner or the tenant. Margate's code says sidewalks must be clear of snow and ice within 12 hours of daylight after it falls. Ventnor's says within 12 hours of daybreak after it builds up, on any property, built on or not. Neither code makes an exception for a house that's empty for the winter.
